What kind of vehicle is the 2025 BMW X7? What does it compare to?
The 2025 BMW X7 is a three-row luxury SUV. Compare it to the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, Audi Q7, and Cadillac Escalade.
Is the 2025 BMW X7 a good SUV?
The X7 is a properly luxurious BMW with a spacious interior, fine materials, excellent turbocharged power, and a supple ride. These big SUVs earn a 7.0 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2025 BMW X7?
Not much, though models with the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package now include a function that lets drivers look in the direction of the lane they want the vehicle to automatically enter. Then, the X7 will do so—assuming road conditions are safe, that is.
The X7 wears distinctive styling, starting with huge—if reasonably well-integrated—kidney grilles up front, which are flanked by razor-thin headlights. It’s more conventional from the side and the rear, as well as from the driver’s seat. The X7 has a terrific cabin with a contemporary design and beautiful materials. BMW’s not stingy about color and trim choices here, either.
Base versions use a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 rated at a decent 375 hp. Its only downside is its ability to tow just 5,400 pounds. The step-up M50i can lug 7,500 pounds thanks to its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 rated at 523 hp. At the top of the lineup, the Alpina XB7 puts out 631 hp, which delivers supercar-style acceleration.
The X7 rides wonderfully, easily soaking up bumps big and small. It is more nimble than you might expect thanks in part to quick-witted steering, though there’s only so much suspension wizardry that can counter its heft. Loaded up, these SUVs easily to 6,000 pounds.
X7s use a lot of premium fuel. Base models check in at 22 mpg combined, while anything with a V-8 will struggle to hit 20 mph even downhill.
There’s really not a bad seat in the X7, so long as you don’t find yourself in the second-row middle seat. (And even it’s not all that terrible.) The X7 has plenty of space, a contemporary design, and high-end materials in line with its price tag. Though there isn’t that much room behind the third row, the X7’s second- and third-row seatbacks flop down to open up considerably more space when needed. We also love the split tailgate arrangement. It’s just so practical.
The X7 has not been crash tested, but all models have good collision-avoidance tech. We strongly recommend adding BMW’s best suite of driver-assistance features, which allow for some hands-off driving at higher speeds.
How much does the 2025 BMW X7 cost?
The X7 xDrive40i starts at $84,675, and it comes with synthetic leather upholstery, 16-way power-adjustable and heated front seats, a 14.9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, and 21-inch alloy wheels.
You can spend nearly double that on a loaded-up Alpina XB7, but realistically most buyers should be fine for around $90,000.
Where is the 2025 BMW X7 made?
In Spartanburg, South Carolina.
