What kind of vehicle is the 2025 BMW X2? What does it compare to?
Redesigned in 2024, the X2 is a curvier coupe-like take on the BMW X1, the entry point to the brand’s bustling crossover SUV lineup. BMW X2 competitors range from the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3 to the Volvo XC40 and Alfa Romeo Tonale.
Is the 2025 BMW X2 a good SUV?
A pair of potent turbo-4 engines lend the small X2 good acceleration, but don’t mistake the handling for anything close to BMW’s smaller, brand-defining sedans. Styled as much like a European hatchback as an American crossover, its design stands out, it seats four adults reasonably well, and it comes well enough equipped to earn a TCC Rating of 6.5 out of 10. What’s new for the 2025 BMW X2?
The second-generation X2 launched new for 2024, and this year BMW makes heated front seats and a wifi trial standard. For a while, BMW had held fast to the industry’s lowest destination fee of $995 until this year, when it bumped to $1,175, which is still relatively low.
The X2’s pronounced nose and vertical kidney grille rise up to a roofline that curves until the very end, accented by a tailgate spoiler. BMW started this coupe-like business nearly 15 years ago on its larger crossover SUVs, and other German automakers as well as Genesis and a few others followed suit. It doesn’t work as well on the X2’s smaller footprint, but it stands out from all the other small luxury crossovers.
Inside, BMW equips it with a panel of screens that house nearly every climate and infotainment function. A floating center console with drive mode and gear selectors lend it an openness, and the angular dash is uncluttered. Supportive front seats with power adjustments and heaters come standard, and rear legroom is decent for the class though the sloping roofline might give 6-footers an unintended haircut. Cargo room is nearly the same as in the boxier X1.
A choice of turbo-4 engines rated at either 241 hp or 312 hp and the same 295 lb-ft of torque offer different driving profiles. The 312-hp M35i comes with an adaptive suspension tuned almost too firmly for everyday commuting, but it also has a 0-60 mph time in the low fives to quicken the commute. Both models handle with the type of body lean that’s typical for the crossover class—that’s why BMW makes a 2-Series coupe and Gran Coupe sedan.
Both models also come standard with all-wheel drive, and the base xDrive28 gets a reasonable 28 mpg combined. An iX2 electric model sold overseas has not been offered in North America.
In addition to heated front seats and an array of screens that includes a 10.7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BMW fits every model with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and blind-spot monitors. The IIHS rated it as a Top Safety Pick for crash protection, but active lane control and adaptive cruise control cost extra.
How much does the 2025 BMW X2 cost?
The curvier roofline of the X2 costs $2,000 more than the mechanically related BMW X1. For 2025, the X2 xDrive28i costs $44,025 and the X2 M35i xDrive runs at $53,475. Both figures include a $1,175 destination charge.
Where is the 2025 BMW X2 made?
